If you’ve lived in your home for a while and/or if you have 5 pets like I do, I’m sure that you’ve noticed the wear and tear that your beautiful home can become subject to over the years. One of the most difficult things to clean in a home has to be tile grout. The shimmer and shine of the kitchen or bathroom floors after a fresh mopping can quickly be overshadowed by the gritty, gray grout that just won’t look clean. We’ve scoured the web to find the best way to clean tile grout, and here’s what we came up with:

The Best Way To Clean Tile Grout

There are a few different ways to tackle the beast known as white tile grout, so we thought we’d give you the best options we’ve found for your grout cleaning needs:

  • Scrub That Grout – This may sounds like a harsh and abrasive way to care for your tile, but since grout staining usually is found on the surface of the grout, a little sandpaper usually can do the trick! Simply fold the sandpaper and rub it back and forth along the grout line. If you’re not ready to dive in with sandpaper, you can also try a pencil eraser or a stiff brush (but avoid brushes with metal bristles as these can wear away the grout). A Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (AKA: My favorite sponge in the world) should also work depending on how bad your stains are. Bottom line: Get ready to get on your hands and knees and scrub away!
  • Use a Grout Solution – There are several over-the-counter grout cleaning products that you can use if your stains are deeper than just on the surface. You also have the option of making your own with bleach and water. Readers of the blog, The Kitchn, swear by Bar Keepers Friend – a mild abrasive cleaner found in most grocery stores. This product can also be used on stainless steel, imitation marble, chrome, porcelain, ceramic, and copper. Sprinkle the product on the tile. Using a soft brush, give it a good lather and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, wipe up the cleanser and mop the floor. Your grout should be squeaky clean!
  • Replace Your Grout – If both methods of cleaning mentioned above don’t work – you may have to replace your grout completely. Use a grout removal tool to remove the old, dirty stuff and replace with fancy new grout. Don’t forget to apply a grout sealer which will help prevent new stains from setting in.

After this research, I think I’m ready to clean my grout! For my grout cleaning project, I think I’ll skip right to the Bar Keepers Friend method. I’ll be sure to post my results right here on Zing, so stay tuned!
