Fun Times on the Cheap
Whether you’re back in school, gearing up for the holidays, or just watching your budget to save up for a bigger goal, it pays to watch your spending—but a person still needs to have fun! I paid $200 for a 3-day music festival ticket this summer, so I know fun can be expensive. But why not ditch the activities that are costing you so you can shell out the big bucks for what you love to do:
1. Get Your Entertainment On. Having people over doesn’t have to be pricey. If you and your friends ditch fancy dinners out in lieu of potlucks, barbeques, or making affordable meals, you’ll save yourself big.
2. Hit Up Free Events. Just this weekend I went to free food festival with friends. We bought a few snacks there and brought our own drinks, sat on the grass, listened to the music and chilled. Basically for free!
3. Get Outdoors. Meet your buddies for a hike, walk or bike ride instead of heading to a movie, show, shopping or some other paid event you won’t be writing home about.
4. Get Smart About Days & Times. Free museum days, matinee movies, and pay-what-you-can music shows and art events are your friend. Ditto for searching online for happy hour deals, discounted days and sliding scale events.
5. Join Up. I’ve met up with the climbing group, the dog-lovers hiking group and the vegetarian cooking group in my area—and each time I met people and do something new for free or next to nothing.
