How College Jobs Can Help Your Resume

While a student at UCSC, I slung ice cream and poured coffee at Banana Joes Café. Ah, those were the days . As students, our jobs aren’t always glamorous. But whether you’re shelving books, working in campus admin, assisting a teacher or something else, you are probably gaining some of the most sought-after skills in the business world today. The trick is to identify experiences that could transfer to the job you’re seeking.

For instance, at Banana Joe’s, I worked the cash register, helped the owner with scheduling, and operated the café alone most evenings. If I were applying to a general office administration position, I could outline these tasks on my resume with phrases like “Provided excellent customer service,” “Assisted with business finances and payroll,” “Operated business independently” and “Oversaw employee schedule.” Here are some other in-demand skills you may not realize you are gaining while making money for school.

• Verbal communication skills
• Demonstrating initiative
• Collaboration/teamwork
• Technical or IT abilities
• Analytic ability
• Strong writing skills

The trick is identifying the most applicable experience you have and leading with the skills your potential employee is seeking. Another tip: Don’t be afraid to include applicable coursework on your resume. That computer science or writing course could put you a step ahead of the competition.
