150W Charging Cable for iPhone 15 Pro? Wild Rumor Sparks Debate

There’s been a lot of speculation lately about the future of Apple’s USB-C port. One of the wild rumors suggests that the iPhone 15 Pro might come with a cable capable of supporting 150W charging, which is more than what many people can pull from their current chargers. The rumor comes from a source that shares reliable information, but it still needs to be an official Apple release.

The source in question is a member of the X community (formerly known as Reddit) who goes by the username Majin Bu. The user has been known to share images of products before they launch and has a solid track record regarding Apple leaks. Over the weekend, a post by Majin Bu claimed that the new iPhone 15 will be bundled with a pair of color-matched braided USB-C cables. This is a significant change from the Lightning cable that has been standard with every iPhone to date and should offer improved durability.

A post-dated September 12 claims that the cables in question will be rated to USB 4 Gen 2 and will feature a cable thickness “much thicker than what you’ll find in the current generation of Apple USB-C cables.” The 0.8-meter braided Cable will also reportedly support Thunderbolt speeds and boasts a power output of up to 150W. The spec bump is welcome, especially considering that iPhones are among the slowest-charging smartphones on the market today. Still, the fact that only pro iPhones will benefit from this improvement could be better.

Moreover, a post by a separate X user (MajinBuOfficial) highlighted the possibility that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro could support up to 150W charging. The user posted a picture of what appeared to be a braided Type-C to Type-C cable that could fit into an iPhone 15 Pro and offer a maximum power output of 150W. The Cable also features strain relief tubes that may help to make it more durable than the typical Lightning cable.

This would be a significant boost in charging speed and is something that all users of the latest iPhones, both non-Pro and Pro, will likely be excited about. However, the spec bump is unlikely to be a game changer regarding battery life, and more is needed to keep up with fast-charging Android phones like Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9.

Apple’s next iPhone 15 Pro lineup is expected to be announced this month at a streamed event, with the new iPhone XR set to debut in October. The rumors around the new iPhones have been much more extensive than in previous years. The company is reportedly working on a completely revamped design, including a USB-C port and an updated Face ID system with a bigger screen.
