A senior White House official said that US President Joe Biden returned from the recently concluded G20 Summit with an optimistic feeling, saying great work was done in those productive days. He added that the US thanks India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the G20 presidency.
According to the official, the US supports India’s efforts to ensure a resilient global economic order. This includes promoting a more robust, more inclusive, more open economy, including the Global South, and addressing challenges like climate change and economic inequality.
The official further said that Biden and Modi discussed the upcoming G20 summit in Buenos Aires and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening and deepening the US-India strategic partnership. They also discussed cooperation on various issues, including countering the threat of terrorism, supporting the rule of law and international security, addressing the threat of cyber attacks, working together to develop a secure 6G network, and accelerating the deployment of zero-emissions electric vehicles.
They also expressed their support for the mission of the International Energy Agency. They pledged to continue working with the Government of India, IEA members, and the Secretariat toward full membership for India. The leaders also agreed on the need to address climate change through ambitious targets for energy efficiency and renewables while embracing the new era of mobility with clean and safe solutions such as smart urban transportation, new business models for electric vehicle financing and production, and biofuels.
Both leaders agreed that a multilateral approach is necessary to counter the dark clouds of coercion and confrontation and that a global order must be built on the principles of the UN Charter, peaceful resolution of disputes, and respect for states’ sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also reaffirmed their support for an open and transparent international financial system.
The leaders welcomed the progress in the WTO Doha Round and affirmed the importance of the WTO’s role as the primary forum for resolving trade disputes. They further emphasized the importance of reforming the WTO governance structure, particularly about the Secretariat.
The leaders reiterated their strong support for a comprehensive WTO reform package to be finalized by the end of this year, and they committed to ensuring that the process is fair and open. They also supported the establishment of an innovative mechanism to facilitate the resolution of trade disputes and the need to improve the effectiveness of the dispute settlement process. They urged all WTO member states to participate fully in the review process. They also supported the establishment of a high-level task force to explore options for an enhanced WTO capacity-building program. They further agreed to continue their collaboration to promote the global digital economy’s growth, including sharing best practices for implementing the WTO Declaration on the Digital Economy and the WIPO Broadband Initiative.
